Awaji ware, originating from Awaji Island in Japan, is renowned for its distinctive glazes, often featuring vibrant greens and its characteristic crackled finish.
This particular bowl, with its depiction of cranes, a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture, exemplifies the aesthetic sensibilities of the era. The combination of the glossy green glaze, the relief-carved white birds, and the crackled texture are hallmarks of Awaji pottery.
